Zweibrucken is a temporary airfield racing circuit laid out on the runways and taxiways of Zweibrucken Airport in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, about 7 kilometres east of the city centre and roughly 29 kilometres west of Saarbrucken. Its motorsport story began in 1996, when the airport's infrastructure was first configured into a temporary track with long runway straights and artificial chicanes built from tyre stacks and pylons. The venue quickly attracted top-tier German racing, hosting rounds of the Super Tourenwagen Cup from 1996 to 1999, alongside the German Formula 3 Championship and the VW Beetle Cup, with drivers such as Emanuele Pirro, Laurent Aiello and Johnny Cecotto competing there. On two wheels it staged the International Pro-Superbike series in the late 1990s on an extended layout using the full runway. Financial constraints ended national championship racing after 1999, and the circuit lay dormant from 2000 to 2019 as the airport shifted from military to civilian use and ceased commercial operations in 2014. In 2020 the venue was revived through the Mythos Sportwagen event and the Historisches Flugplatzrennen, a historic-racing meeting that adopted a roughly 2 km loop and partnered with the GLPpro regularity championship. The events have built new traditions, including a Friday-evening Oldtimer-Korso parade through the city, and from 2024 the Mythos meeting evolved into the aviation-and-motorsport Air & Speed event. Uniquely, the airfield is not fully closed during racing, with general-aviation flight slots scheduled between sessions, making it the world's only active airport racing circuit.
Operated by: Zweibrücken Airport
The roughly 2 km loop adopted in 2020 for the Historisches Flugplatzrennen, laid out across the airport's runways and taxiways with chicanes built from tyre stacks. Cleared between sessions for general-aviation flight slots, making it the world's only active airport racing circuit.
