World Wide Technology Raceway, often still known by its historic Gateway name, sits in Madison, Illinois, just across the Mississippi River from downtown St Louis, Missouri. Racing on the site dates back to 1967, when a modest drag strip opened, growing into the road-racing-focused Gateway International Raceway through the 1980s. The current speedway took shape in the mid-1990s when former Long Beach Grand Prix promoter Chris Pook demolished the old courses to build an oval capable of attracting Indycar and NASCAR. The result was a distinctive egg-shaped 1.25-mile oval, with one end carrying a much wider-radius turn than the other, both banked at around 11 degrees. CART ChampCars headlined the first major event in May 1997, and NASCAR's Nationwide and Truck series became regular fixtures soon after. After Dover Motorsports closed the venue in 2010, retired racer and developer Curtis Francois reopened it in 2012, rebranding it Gateway Motorsports Park and rebuilding its event roster. World Wide Technology acquired naming rights in 2019, and the IndyCar Series and NASCAR Cup Series have both since returned. It is the only North American circuit to host events from NASCAR, IndyCar and NHRA drag racing.
