Hill Climb
Wiscombe Park is a parkland speed hill climb set in a private estate near Honiton in east Devon, run by the Woolbridge Motor Club. The venue staged its first meeting in August 1958, the result of a group of enthusiasts led by Major Richard Chichester who carved a competition course through the estate's wooded valley. The roughly one-kilometre run (about 1,000 yards) climbs and twists past a sequence of named features, including the Gate, the Sawbench hairpin, the Wishbone and the Martini hairpin. The course was extended over the winter of 1960-61 with the addition of Castle Straight and the Martini Hairpin, taking it close to its present configuration. Since 1962 Wiscombe has hosted rounds of the British Hill Climb Championship almost every season, and it remains a fixture of the national calendar alongside club and vintage meetings. The outright hill record has fallen steadily over the decades as single-seater technology advanced; recent record runs have dipped into the low thirty-second range. Its scenic estate setting and challenging, sinuous layout have made it one of the best-loved venues in British speed hill climbing.
