Circuit
Winton Motor Raceway sits in the undulating country near Winton, just outside Benalla in north-east Victoria, Australia. Built by the Benalla Auto Club as a permanent replacement for its earlier rough-and-ready track at Barjarg, the circuit hosted its first race meeting on 26 November 1961 and is the oldest continuously operating circuit in the state. Nicknamed 'Australia's Action Track', it pairs tight, twisty sections with longer straights, leaving drivers little room to breathe; Dick Johnson famously likened a lap to 'running a marathon around your clothes line'. From humble club origins it rose to national prominence through the 1970s, hosting rounds of the Australian Drivers' Championship and Australian Sports Car Championship, and from 1985 a round of the Australian Touring Car Championship. A $1.1 million extension in 1997 added the longer National Circuit, complete with new pit complex, ahead of the V8 Supercar round. The Winton SuperSprint was a long-running highlight of the Supercars calendar until the round was dropped after 2022. Today the venue remains one of Australia's busiest, a popular testing base for Victorian Supercar teams and host to the Hi-Tec Oils Super Series, Australian Formula Ford and a packed schedule of state and club racing. Its accessible layout and excellent viewing have long made it a favourite with spectators.
