Circuit

Wanneroo Raceway is Western Australia's only permanent racing circuit, located in the Neerabup area roughly 40 minutes north of Perth. It was built by the Western Australian Sporting Car Club after the club lost its previous home at the former Caversham airfield, and the first race meeting took place in March 1969 on a layout devised by club figure Max McCracken. The course has measured around 2.411 km throughout its life, and an early highlight was a six-hour endurance race before touring cars came to dominate, with rounds of the Australian Touring Car Championship held from 1973 and regularly from 1977. New pits and a control tower opened in 1979, the same year the circuit hosted its only Australian Grand Prix. In 1992 a 1.7 km short course was added and the track was renamed Barbagallo Raceway after long-time sponsor Alf Barbagallo, before reverting to Wanneroo Raceway in 2020. State government investment of AUS$10.5 million from 2011 funded a new pit and paddock complex that secured the return of the Supercars Championship, and the track was resurfaced ahead of 2019, which also brought a new chicane for motorcycle use and the first night Supercars event. Beyond its Supercars round the circuit hosts state and club championships, sprints, drifting and frequent testing, and is also used for police driver training. It remains the focal point of the racing scene in an otherwise under-served part of Australia.
