Circuit

The Autodromo Vallelunga Piero Taruffi sits in the hills around 32 km north of Rome, near Campagnano di Roma, surrounded by lakes and vineyards. The venue traces its roots to 1951, when a sand-and-dirt oval was laid out on the site of a former horse-racing course; an asphalt road circuit designed by Italian driver-engineer Piero Taruffi followed in 1957. A doubling in length created the 2-mile International course, opened in 1963 with the non-championship Rome Grand Prix, and the Automobile Club d'Italia took ownership in 1967, modernising the pits and grandstands. A major refurbishment completed in 2005 added a roughly one-kilometre extension with a long back straight and 180-degree hairpin, producing today's 4.085 km International Circuit. The track was formally dedicated to its original designer in 2006, becoming the Autodromo Vallelunga Piero Taruffi. Over the decades it has hosted Formula Two, Formula 3000, the 6 Hours of Rome endurance race, World Superbike rounds in 2007-2008, and Formula One test sessions. It remains a fixture of Italian national motorsport, staging the Italian GT Championship, Italian F4, TCR Italy and NASCAR Euro Series. The circuit is also home to Kunos Simulazioni, developers of the Assetto Corsa racing simulator, and is used by ACI for public driving-safety courses.
