Circuit
The Reid Park Street Circuit is a temporary street course set largely within Reid Park in downtown Townsville, in the Australian state of Queensland. It first appeared on the calendar in 2009, when Australia's premier touring car category sought new venues in regional population centres, and it quickly became one of the most popular events on the schedule. Roughly seventy percent of the lap is made up of purpose-built roads, with the remainder using existing public streets such as Boundary Street and Charters Towers Road, and the layout was developed with input from former champion Mark Skaife. The roughly AUS$29.58 million development gave Townsville permanent pit and paddock buildings within the park, in an arrangement comparable to Melbourne's Albert Park, that remain in use year-round for community recreation. The circuit blends fast, flowing road-course sections with tight, concrete-lined street segments, making it a demanding test that has proved difficult for drivers to master. It is best known as the home of the annual Supercars Championship round, the Townsville 500, and has at times hosted double-header weekends. The event regularly drew three-day crowds of around 150,000 in its early years and brought a substantial economic boost to the region. Supporting categories such as Aussie Racing Cars, the Toyota 86 series and Touring Car Masters typically share the bill.
