Circuit
Tor Poznań is the largest racing circuit in Poland and something of a hidden gem, located in the Ławica area on the western outskirts of the city of Poznań. The circuit was created between 1975 and 1977 after a decision to convert land at the edge of Ławica airport, one of Poland's oldest airfields, for racing use. The project was driven by the Automobile Club of Wielkopolska and the FSR 'Polmo' vehicle manufacturer, whose factory stood nearby. Designer Mieczysław Biliński developed the layout with advice from figures including Bernie Ecclestone, producing a sizeable 4.083 km course that retains good flow despite its twisty sections. The track officially opened on 1 December 1977 and has been a permanent fixture on the Polish racing scene ever since, joined in 1980 by a kart circuit that shares part of the main course. Reasonably fast and well-supplied with run-off, it is often compared to the Brno circuit, albeit with less elevation change. It was resurfaced in 2006 and homologated to FIA Grade 3, making it the only internationally certified circuit in Poland. Drivers including Robert Kubica, Michael Schumacher and Jackie Stewart have lapped the track, while Marc Gené holds the unofficial outright record after a Ferrari Formula One demonstration run. Today it remains the focal point of Polish national motorsport.
