Circuit

Tokachi International Speedway is a permanent road course in the Kasai District of Hokkaido, Japan's northern main island, near the city of Obihiro and only a short drive from Tokachi-Obihiro Airport. Construction began in 1992 and the circuit was completed the following year, opening in May 1993 with a programme that included a 400 km N1 endurance race and a 300 km Group A touring car event; it was the first FIA-standard circuit built on Hokkaido. The layout is largely flat and built in a contemporary, almost European style, combining a long main straight with a mix of medium and slow-speed corners. Its full Grand Prix configuration can be shortened to a Clubman course or to a compact Junior course that has its own pit and paddock and is mainly used for racing schools. The venue quickly became established on the national scene, hosting the Japanese Touring Car and F3 championships and, from 1994, the Tokachi 24 Hours endurance race that ran for many years, usually as part of the Super Taikyu series. Over time it also welcomed Formula Nippon, Formula 3000, the Japanese GT Championship and rounds of D1 Grand Prix drifting. After a 2009 bankruptcy the circuit was bought by a new owner and renamed simply Tokachi Speedway in 2010, since when it has hosted mainly national and local-level events. The Grand Prix and Clubman courses are built to FIA Grade 2 standard.
