Circuit

Three Sisters Circuit is a compact club racing and karting venue at Ashton-in-Makerfield, just outside Wigan in the north west of England. It takes its name from three large colliery spoil heaps, locally nicknamed the 'Wigan Alps', that once stood on the site of the former Garswood Hall Colliery. After coal mining ceased in 1958 the derelict land was reclaimed over two decades, with 3.5 million tonnes of earth reshaped into a 44-hectare country park, and the Three Sisters Recreation Area opened to the public in November 1978 with the kart track as its centrepiece. Although it began as a karting circuit it quickly attracted other disciplines, with the Preston and District Motorcycle Club bringing bike racing in the early 1980s. A new extension in the early 1990s added gradient, climbing from the end of the Conrod Straight up Pentith Rise to Coward's Summit, stretching the full lap to just under a mile. The installation of Armco barriers around the same time allowed car sprints and other events to run for the first time. The circuit is regarded as one of the tightest and most technical in the UK, and has hosted early outings for names including Superbike World Champions Neil Hodgson and James Toseland and the McLaren Champions of the Future programme. After a sudden closure in 2017 when its operator went bust, new management took over and resurfaced the track, and it continues to host karting, supermoto, motorcycle racing, drifting, car rallies and sprints for drivers of all ages.
