Circuit

The Autódromo Termas de Río Hondo is a permanent road course on the outskirts of the spa town of the same name in Argentina's Santiago del Estero province, set alongside the artificial Río Hondo reservoir. It first opened in May 2008 as one of the country's longest circuits, built by the provincial government and quickly adopted by domestic series such as Turismo Carretera, TC2000 and Formula Renault. After the 2012 season the venue was comprehensively rebuilt to FIM Grade A standard under a design by Italian specialist Jarno Zaffelli, gaining a new infield loop, a fast 180-degree first turn and a reprofiled middle sector to improve overtaking. The redesign brought international ambitions to fruition: MotoGP added the circuit to host the Argentine Grand Prix from 2014, while the FIA Grade 2 homologation allowed the World Touring Car Championship to race there from 2013. A distinctive feature is the motorsport museum at the end of the pit lane, dedicated to Argentine racing great Juan Manuel Fangio. In February 2021 a major fire destroyed the main pit building, media centre and grandstand, though the Fangio museum and control tower survived; reconstruction was completed in early 2022 ahead of the returning Grand Prix. The current Grand Prix Circuit runs to 4.805 km over 14 turns, with a shorter 4.430 km variant also available. Today the circuit remains a fixture of Argentine national championships and has hosted both Grand Prix motorcycle racing and major touring car series.
