Hill Climb

Saint-Ursanne–Les Rangiers is one of Switzerland's most storied hillclimbs, climbing through the wooded hills of the Jura from the medieval town of Saint-Ursanne up toward the Les Rangiers pass. The first edition was run in 1926 on an earlier Develier-to-Les Rangiers alignment, and the event joined the national championship in 1930. After road closures forced a relocation, the modern Saint-Ursanne start was adopted in the mid-1950s, and the contest went international, drawing names such as Jim Clark and Jo Siffert. Since 1972 it has been the lone Swiss round of the FIA European Hill Climb Championship, and its layout of just over five kilometres with around 350 m of elevation gain is reckoned the fastest course in the series. The race carries a sombre chapter: five-time winner Lionel Régal was killed in wet conditions during the 2010 running, though the event endured and resumed each year, pausing only for the pandemic. Christian Merli set the outright record in 2022, averaging close to 190 km/h. Held annually on the third weekend of August, it still gathers roughly 200 competitors and thousands of spectators on the hillsides.
