Circuit

The Streets of St. Petersburg is a 1.8-mile temporary circuit in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida, that uniquely combines public roads with a runway of the adjacent Albert Whitted Airport. Street racing first came to the bayfront in 1985, when the SCCA staged Trans Am and Can Am events that initially ran out along the pier approach, creating the longest stretch of waterfront racing in the United States. After course revisions removed the isolated pier section, the races continued until 1990 before the loss of a sponsor ended the original run, with brief revivals around Tropicana Field in 1996 and 1997. The event was reborn in its current form in 2003, when organisers linked surviving downtown turns to an Albert Whitted Airport runway via purpose-built connecting roads, a permanent pit lane and paddock, headlined initially by the CART Champ Car series. When racing resumed in 2005 it became the first street or road course ever contested by the previously ovals-only Indy Racing League, won by local hero Dan Wheldon, after whom one of the airport link roads was later named. The smooth surface and genuine overtaking opportunities made the layout immediately popular with drivers, and it has become firmly established as the traditional IndyCar season opener. The American Le Mans Series raced here from 2007 to 2009, and sports-car action has continued through Pirelli World Challenge and GT World Challenge America. A reprofiled Turn 3 was introduced in 2017 to sharpen the radius after a series of incidents.
