Hill Climb

Shelsley Walsh, in the Teme valley in rural Worcestershire, is widely regarded as the oldest motorsport venue still running on its original course. The Midland Automobile Club staged its first hill climb there on 12 August 1905, and the club has continued to run the venue ever since, pausing only for the two world wars; that unbroken record predates circuits such as Indianapolis, Monza and Le Mans. The climb covers 1,000 yards, a length fixed in 1907 after the inaugural runs covered a slightly shorter 992 yards, and it gains around 328 feet over that distance at an average gradient near 1 in 9, steepening to about 1 in 6 at its sharpest and narrowing to as little as twelve feet in places. Drivers tackle the Kennel bend and the tight, bank-lined Crossing before the celebrated Bottom and Top Esses, where fast times are won or lost, then hold full throttle along the closing straight to the finish at the crest. The hill remains the spiritual home of the British Hillclimb Championship, and its outright course record stands at 22.20 seconds, set by Wallace Menzies in a run-off during the August 2026 championship meeting, after Will Hall had briefly held a shared record of 22.27 seconds earlier that day.
