Drag Strip
Shakespeare County Raceway was a quarter-mile drag strip near Long Marston in Warwickshire, England, laid out on a runway of the former RAF Long Marston airfield. Casual drag racing took place on the site from the early 1970s before it settled into a permanent venue in 1980 as Long Marston Raceway. It was rebranded Avon Park Raceway in 1990, promoted as the fastest track outside the United States, and finally adopted the Shakespeare County Raceway name in 2008. The old airfield concrete gave the 0.25-mile (402 m) strip a smooth, grippy surface, and over the decades it grew into Britain's busiest drag venue after Santa Pod, hosting national championship rounds and a packed summer calendar that ranged from street machines and classic American iron through to professional top-fuel cars and bikes. The track closed at the end of 2018 after the land was earmarked for housing redevelopment, ending more than three decades of organised drag racing on the site.
