Circuit
The Circuito San Juan Villicum is a modern permanent road course in the Albardón department of Argentina's San Juan province, built close to the country's symbolic National Route 40 near the foothills of the Andes. First announced by the provincial government in 2015 and designed by Argentine architect Leonardo Stella with input from the FIM, it was conceived to return top-level national and international racing to San Juan after the El Zonda circuit fell from favour on safety grounds. Construction began in October 2016, and its undulating contours were artificially shaped by moving more than 700,000 cubic metres of earth. The anti-clockwise circuit opened officially on 14 October 2018 with a round of the Superbike World Championship, where Jonathan Rea took a brace of wins, followed weeks later by the first car races for Turismo Carretera and Súper TC2000. Homologated to FIM Grade A and FIA Grade 2, the venue offers permanent grandstands for around 10,000 spectators and a pit building with up to 64 garages. In August 2019 the layout was modified at the request of Turismo Carretera drivers, adding a short straight that effectively bypasses Turn 13 to raise corner speeds and open new strategic options. The current Grand Prix Circuit measures 4.276 km over 17 turns, while a dedicated 4.254 km Turismo Carretera Circuit is used for the popular domestic series. The track has hosted World Superbike, World Supersport, TCR South America and Turismo Carretera among others.
