Circuit

The Rome ePrix Circuit, formally the Circuito Cittadino dell'EUR, was a temporary street course laid out for the all-electric Formula E championship in the Italian capital. It ran through the EUR district in the south-west of the city, a planned area originally developed under Benito Mussolini for an intended world fair, with the monumental Colosseo Quadrato forming a striking backdrop to the track. The race made its debut in 2018, when Sam Bird won the inaugural event before a crowd of around 45,000, and was one of the longest layouts on the Formula E calendar from the outset. The original 2018-19 configuration began on the Via Cristoforo Colombo and took in landmarks such as the Obelisco di Marconi and the Rome Convention Centre. After the 2020 edition fell victim to the Covid-19 pandemic, the race returned in 2021 with a substantially revised and lengthened layout designed with input from a drivers' committee to reduce the event's impact on city traffic while preserving the circuit's flowing character. Unusually for a Formula E street venue, the EUR track featured fast, sweeping corners of varying radius, significant elevation changes and frequent surface changes that drivers consistently praised. Rome hosted five editions in total before being dropped from the 2023-24 season, with organisers judging the circuit unsuitable for the more powerful Gen3 machinery; it was effectively replaced on the calendar by the Misano ePrix.
