The Red Bull Ring is a 4.326 km motorsport circuit set in the Styrian mountains at Spielberg, Austria, framed by dramatic elevation changes and scenic alpine backdrops. It opened on 26 July 1969 as the Osterreichring, a fast and visually spectacular replacement for the bland Zeltweg airfield course nearby, and hosted the Formula One Austrian Grand Prix for eighteen consecutive years from 1970 to 1987. The original layout was a sequence of fast sweepers, including the daunting downhill banked Bosch Kurve, and was considered dangerous as turbo-era speeds climbed; a Hella-Licht chicane was added in 1977 to tame the run up the hill. After Formula One outgrew the circuit it was rebuilt and shortened, reopening in 1996 as the A1-Ring, which brought the Austrian Grand Prix back from 1997 to 2003. The circuit then fell into disuse until Red Bull's Dietrich Mateschitz bought and renovated it, reopening it as the Red Bull Ring on 15 May 2011. Formula One returned in 2014 and MotoGP in 2016, with the venue also staging the short-lived Styrian Grand Prix in 2020 and 2021. The modern lap is short but punchy, with only around ten corners linked by steep climbs and heavy braking zones that reward power and traction. Alongside the Austrian Grand Prix, the circuit hosts MotoGP, DTM and Ferrari Challenge events. The grounds are operated by Projekt Spielberg, and a separate Sudschleife national loop and motorcycle variant share the site.
