Phoenix Raceway is a flat, low-banked one-mile tri-oval in Avondale, Arizona, set in the foothills of the Estrella Mountains near Phoenix. Opened in 1964 as Phoenix International Raceway, it was originally a two-in-one facility pairing the oval with a 2.7-mile road course that wound around the exterior, a design that produced the track's signature dog-leg on the back straight. It was conceived as a western home for open-wheel racing and hosted dozens of IndyCar events over the decades, drawing winners such as A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti and the Unser family. NASCAR first visited in 1978 and brought its premier series in 1988, after which stock car racing gradually became dominant. A 2011 reconfiguration added variable banking, tightened and pushed out the dog-leg and sealed off the road course, leaving an oval-only layout measured at 1.022 miles. A $178 million renovation completed in 2018 rebuilt the infield, moved the start/finish line and reduced seating to around 42,000. The track briefly carried the ISM Raceway name before reverting to Phoenix Raceway in 2020. Today it stages two NASCAR weekends a year, the second of which serves as the season finale and Championship Race. Its quirky shape and desert setting have earned it the nickname 'the desert oddball'.
