Circuit

Pembrey Circuit, officially the Welsh Motor Sports Centre, lies between Kidwelly and Llanelli in Carmarthenshire on the site of the former RAF Pembrey airfield, home during the Second World War to Spitfire squadrons and the RAF's Air Gunnery School. A shortage of racing venues in Wales led the Welsh Race Drivers' Association and the Sports Council for Wales to develop the disused airfield into a permanent circuit, which opened on 21 May 1989 with Nigel Petch's MGB taking the first race win. Its mix of fast, sweeping bends and tight hairpins made it a favoured test venue in the late 1980s, used by Formula One teams including McLaren, and it hosted the British Touring Car Championship in 1992 and 1993 plus seven consecutive seasons of British Formula 3, a grounding for drivers such as Jenson Button and Jan Magnussen. New circuit variations were introduced in 2017, and the venue, described on its own site as a 2.4-kilometre technical circuit usable in a variety of combinations, today concentrates on club car and motorcycle racing, track days and testing, alongside rounds of the British Rallycross and British Truck Racing championships and the annual Welsh Motorsport & Supercar Festival.
