Circuit

Johor Circuit, located at Pasir Gudang in Malaysia's Johor state, opened in 1986 to serve the country's growing community of motorsport enthusiasts. Within a few years it had gained international recognition, and in 1990 it was upgraded to meet FIM Grand Prix homologation requirements in the hope of joining the world championship calendar. While the Malaysian motorcycle Grand Prix initially went to Shah Alam, Johor hosted rounds of the World Superbike Championship in 1992 and 1993, with riders such as Carl Fogarty and Doug Polen taking wins. Following further upgrades, the circuit finally staged a single FIM Grand Prix in 1998, won in the 500cc class by Mick Doohan, before the event moved permanently to the new Sepang International Circuit. After that the venue declined into national and regional use and track days, becoming overshadowed by Sepang and the lost Shah Alam circuit. In 2015 the Sultan of Johor announced a grass-roots redevelopment and the track closed for renovation, but those plans stalled and it has effectively been mothballed since. Its long-term future remains uncertain, tied in part to a proposed new international circuit elsewhere in the state.

The circuit's sole configuration, a 12-turn road course built in 1986 and later upgraded to FIM Grand Prix homologation standard. It hosted World Superbike rounds in 1992-93 and a one-off motorcycle Grand Prix in 1998 before falling into disuse.
