Mobility Resort Motegi is a Honda-owned motorsport venue set in a hilly, amphitheatre-like landscape near the town of Motegi in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, roughly 160 kilometres north of Tokyo. Conceived in the late 1980s as a centre to showcase Honda's products, it took more than a decade of planning and an enormous earthmoving programme before opening in July 1997 as Twin Ring Motegi. The unusual Twin Ring name reflected its original twin-track concept: a low-banked, egg-shaped oval speedway and a separate FIA/FIM-standard road course, an oval-plus-road pairing rare anywhere in the world. The oval rose to early prominence hosting Japan's first IndyCar races and an exhibition NASCAR event, with Danica Patrick's 2008 win there becoming the first by a woman in IndyCar competition. The 4.8-kilometre road course winds away to the east, passing beneath the speedway at two points, and is the busier of the two tracks, hosting Super GT, Super Formula and frequent national events. A major 2011 earthquake caused subsidence that left the oval unsuitable for racing, and the oval is now largely decommissioned and considered unlikely ever to host competition again. The road course took over as the home of Japan's motorcycle Grand Prix, having hosted the Pacific Grand Prix from 2000 and the Japanese Grand Prix since 2004, and remains a headline MotoGP venue. The facility also includes the Honda Collection Hall museum, a riding school, a kart track and other attractions. On 1 March 2022 the venue was renamed Mobility Resort Motegi to mark its 25th anniversary.
