Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, long known simply as Mosport, sits in the Regional Municipality of Clarington north of Bowmanville in Ontario, Canada. It holds the distinction of being the country's first permanent road racing facility, with construction completed in May 1961 after the British Empire Motor Club spotted a suitable parcel of farmland near Bowmanville in 1958. The name is a contraction of Motorsport Limited, the company formed to build and run the venue. Carved into the rolling Ontario countryside, the track is celebrated as a fast, undulating classic whose flowing layout follows the natural contours of the land. Its best-known feature is the Moss Corner complex of Turns 5A and 5B, reshaped on the advice of Stirling Moss when he was shown the original plans. The circuit hosted the Canadian Grand Prix on and off from 1967 until Formula One departed for Montreal after 1977, and it was a regular stop for the Can-Am series in its heyday. Following financial troubles and a period of decline, the venue was revived under Don Panoz from 1998 and then by a consortium including former racer Ron Fellows, who took ownership in 2011 and brought the Canadian Tire sponsorship and naming rights. Today it is a fixture of the IMSA SportsCar Championship and also welcomes the NASCAR Canada Series and historic events. The circuit's quick, demanding corners have made it both popular and notorious, with several high-profile accidents over its history.
