Circuit

Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli sits a short distance inland from the Adriatic beach resorts of Rimini, Riccione and Cattolica in Italy's Emilia-Romagna region. Planned from 1969 and inaugurated for racing in August 1972, it began life as the Autodromo di Santamonica, a largely flat layout that doubled back on itself and was unusual for its floodlighting and night racing. Through the 1970s it drew Formula Two, European Formula 3 and sportscar fields, but it was motorcycle racing that made the circuit's name, hosting World Championship rounds under the San Marino banner from 1985. A 1993 extension brought the lap up to the length the FIM required, after which World Superbikes became a regular fixture. A complete overhaul over the 2006-07 off-season reversed the circuit to run clockwise and added modern run-off and grandstands, securing the return of MotoGP for the San Marino and Rimini Riviera Grand Prix in 2007. In November 2011 the venue was renamed in honour of local MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli, born in nearby Cattolica, who had died a week earlier at Sepang. The current Grand Prix layout measures 4.226 km over 16 turns, with corners such as Curva del Carro, Quercia, Tramonto and the Variante del Parco. Beyond bikes it has welcomed the DTM, GT World Challenge Europe, the European Truck Racing Championship and, from 2024, a dedicated Formula E configuration. A 2024 Formula E course of 3.381 km was created by adding chicanes at the southern end of the circuit. Riders have long noted the track's mix of flat, flowing curves and a sometimes bumpy resurfaced asphalt.
