The Milwaukee Mile sits within the grounds of the Wisconsin State Fair Park in West Allis, Wisconsin, and claims the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating motor racing venue in the world. Originally a private horse-racing track in existence since at least 1876, it held its first automobile races in 1903 on a dirt surface. The modern era began in April 1954 when the State Fair Board paved the one-mile oval and added an infield road course. For decades the Mile was a fixture of Indycar racing, traditionally staging an event the weekend after the Indianapolis 500, and it saw landmark moments such as Jim Clark's 1963 rear-engined Lotus-Ford victory that signalled the end of the front-engined roadster. When the oval was resurfaced and remeasured, its length was found to be slightly over a mile, and the IRL settled on a figure of 1.015 miles in 2004, although NASCAR still uses the traditional one-mile measure. IndyCar last raced here in 2015 before a hiatus, returning to the schedule in 2024. Today the ARCA Menards Series headlines with the Milwaukee 150 each August, while the ARCA Midwest Tour runs a separate June race. A 'Save the Mile' campaign has long worked to keep racing alive at the historic circuit.
