The Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit is set in the Mandalika Special Economic Zone on the southern coast of Lombok island, Indonesia, in a region that is both a developing tourist destination and a hugely important market for motorcycle manufacturers. It is a purpose-built track that incorporates some existing public roads, which can be returned to normal traffic when the circuit is not racing. The layout was first sketched by Mark Hughes of MRK1 Consulting in early 2017, with MRK1 and Populous credited as circuit architects, and the project was delivered through a roughly one-billion-dollar agreement with France's Vinci Construction signed in 2018. The circuit opened in November 2021 and was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo, who rode a lap on a motorcycle. It measures around 4.3 km with 17 turns and is surfaced in Stone Mastic Asphalt chosen to improve grip. World Superbike racing arrived in 2021, and MotoGP began visiting from 2022 as the Indonesian motorcycle Grand Prix. The track has also welcomed the Asia Talent Cup, the Asia Road Racing Championship, GT World Challenge Asia and Porsche Carrera Cup Asia. Riders including Marc Marquez have characterised the layout as relatively simple with limited overtaking lines. The circuit is supported by an ambitious surrounding development plan that envisages hotels, retail and other tourist infrastructure adjacent to the venue. Much of the spectator accommodation is expected to be drawn from nearby Bali, a short flight away.
