The Autodromo dell'Umbria, commonly known as Magione, sits near the town of Magione in Umbria, central Italy, about 20 km west of Perugia and a short distance east of Lake Trasimeno. It was conceived by a group of local racing drivers of the Scuderia Carpine who wanted a compact track for testing and club events; construction began in 1972 and the 1.65 km Autodromo di Magione was inaugurated in April 1973. Tight and technical from the outset, it quickly became a national fixture, hosting Italian Formula Three rounds that featured future Formula One drivers such as Michele Alboreto, Elio de Angelis and Riccardo Patrese. After the original owners ran into financial trouble, a consortium led by the Automobile Club of Perugia took over and renamed it the Autodromo dell'Umbria in honour of Grand Prix driver Mario Umberto Borzacchini. A mid-1990s extension added a new southern section, bringing the lap to its present 2.507 km with a fresh pit and paddock complex. From the mid-1980s to 2010 the circuit hosted the Henry Morrogh Racing Drivers School, whose alumni included F1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve. It remains one of Italy's shortest tracks and hosts national and club racing, manufacturer test days, the quirky fuel-economy 25 Hours of Magione, and CIV motorcycle events.
