Circuit
Irungattukottai, also known as the Madras Motor Race Track (MMRT) or Madras International Circuit, sits near Sriperumbudur on the outskirts of Chennai in India's Tamil Nadu state, roughly 45 minutes west of Chennai International Airport. Built by the Madras Motor Sports Club as India's first permanent racing circuit, it opened in 1990 on a 200-acre site after the FIA assisted with the layout, taking over from earlier temporary airfield courses such as Sholavaram. The venue was conceived during the 1970s and 1980s boom in southern Indian motorsport, when home-grown single-seater categories like Formula Maruti drew large crowds. From its earliest years the full circuit hosted the pre-season Madras Grand Prix for Formula 3, attracting international entrants alongside local talent including future British F3 champion Narain Karthikeyan. The flowing road course was resurfaced in 2007 and again in 2017 and is licensed to FIA Grade 2 standard. Today it remains the heart of Indian motorsport, home to the popular MRF single-seater series and a wide range of national two- and four-wheel championships. The presence of a Hyundai factory directly opposite the circuit underlines its continuing significance to the region.
