Hill Climb

Loton Park Hill Climb runs through the historic deer park of the Loton Park estate near Alberbury in Shropshire, on land leased from the estate's Leighton family. Members of the Shrewsbury-based Severn Valley Motor Club laid out the course in the mid-1950s, and Peter Foulkes won the first competition there in a Cooper-Climax. Closure loomed at the end of the 1960s until the Hagley & District Light Car Club agreed a lease with owner Sir Michael Leighton in 1970, and the club has run every meeting since. At 1,475 yards (1,349 metres) it is one of the longest courses on the British Hill Climb Championship calendar, climbing at an average gradient of around 1 in 25 that steepens to about 1 in 7, with an unusual downhill stretch early in the run. The club's season runs from Easter to late September and includes rounds of the MSA British and Midland Hill Climb Championships, club and one-make events, and the Loton Park Championship. The outright course record stands at 41.76 seconds, set by Wallace Menzies on 26 September 2021.

History

Loton Park's course runs through the deer park of the Loton Park estate, the Leighton family's seat near Alberbury in Shropshire. Members of the Severn Valley Motor Club, based in nearby Shrewsbury, built the hill climb in the mid-1950s, and Peter Foulkes took the first win in a Cooper-Climax. The venue faced closure at the end of the 1960s until the Hagley & District Light Car Club struck a lease with estate owner Sir Michael Leighton in 1970; the club has organised every meeting since.

The circuit

The climb covers 1,475 yards (1,349 metres), among the longest courses on the British Hill Climb Championship calendar, with an average gradient of about 1 in 25 that steepens to roughly 1 in 7 in places, and an unusual downhill section early in the run. The current outright record, 41.76 seconds, was set by Wallace Menzies on 26 September 2021 during a British Championship round.
