Circuit

The Long Beach Street Circuit is a temporary course laid out through downtown Long Beach in Southern California, close to the waterfront. First run in 1975, it is one of the oldest and most recognisable street races in North America and helped pioneer the idea of using a city race to rejuvenate a local economy. The inaugural event was for Formula 5000 cars and was the brainchild of travel agent Chris Pook, who envisioned turning the then-austere city into a Monte Carlo of the West Coast. Formula One arrived for the United States Grand Prix West from 1976 to 1983, with Mario Andretti's 1977 win putting the race firmly on the international map. From 1984 the event switched to IndyCar racing, which secured its long-term future and remains the centrepiece today alongside the IMSA SportsCar Championship. The circuit has evolved as the surrounding area has been redeveloped, but it retains the sweeping curve of Shoreline Drive as a constant signature feature, along with the tight Turn 1 fountain hairpin area. A short-lived Formula E race used a modified version of the course in 2015 and 2016. The current Grand Prix configuration measures about 3.167 km. Title sponsorship ran under Toyota for more than three decades before Acura took over the naming rights in 2019, giving the event its modern Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach identity. It is an FIA Grade 2 circuit and an enduring annual fixture of the American racing calendar.
