Las Vegas Motor Speedway is a sprawling motorsport complex located about 12 miles north of downtown Las Vegas, Nevada, alongside Interstate 15. Although best known for its 1.5-mile tri-oval superspeedway, the site also encompasses multiple road courses, a separate short oval known as the Bullring, a quarter-mile Legends oval and a drag strip. Racing on the land dates back to a road course and drag strip opened in the early 1970s, but the modern superspeedway was built as part of a roughly $200 million development that broke ground in 1995. The new oval opened in 1996 and gained a NASCAR Cup date in 1998, with Mark Martin winning the inaugural top-level race before 120,000 spectators. Speedway Motorsports bought the facility in 1998 and has continued to develop it. In 2006 the oval was reconfigured with progressive banking raised from 12 to 20 degrees in the turns and nine degrees on the straights, and pit road was relocated closer to the grandstands. The complex hosts NASCAR weekends in spring and autumn, an October NHRA drag event and a busy calendar of short-track racing at the Bullring. The site has also staged the Electric Daisy Carnival music festival each summer since 2011. The venue was the scene of the fatal 2011 IndyCar crash that claimed Dan Wheldon, after which the series did not return.
