Circuit

La Junta Raceway is a club racing and testing circuit in southeastern Colorado, laid out on part of a former military airfield about three miles north of the city of La Junta. The site began life as a civilian airfield in 1935 and was expanded substantially during World War II as a bomber-crew training base. After the war the base was handed back to local government, and by 1955 sports car racers had fashioned a 2.8-mile course from its surplus runways and perimeter roads for SCCA events, later growing to around 3.1 miles before racing ceased in the 1960s. The track was revived in 1974 as a much shorter 1.5-mile, seven-turn course built on a corner of disused runway. Being airfield-flat, it is functional rather than dramatic, but it gives local racers a venue in a region with few circuits. Aside from a pit lane there are essentially no permanent facilities, with even fuel brought in for events. It typically hosts a couple of races a year alongside frequent testing, and was largely resurfaced in 2015.
