Kentucky Speedway is a 1.5-mile tri-oval intermediate speedway in Sparta, Kentucky, built by former Turfway Park owner Jerry Carroll as he sought new ventures amid a late-1990s boom in stock car racing. Construction began in July 1998 and the track opened in June 2000, immediately hosting NASCAR Truck Series, IndyCar, and ARCA competition. From its debut the venue pursued a NASCAR Cup Series date, a goal that eluded Carroll and was only achieved after Bruton Smith's Speedway Motorsports group bought and renovated the facility, securing a Cup race in 2011. The tri-oval features turns banked at 17 and 14 degrees with a banked frontstretch, and it was extensively reprofiled ahead of its Cup debut and again during a 2016 resurfacing. The complex also includes a small 0.2-mile Legends oval used for entry-level racing. After its 2020 race was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic, NASCAR chose not to return Kentucky to its schedule for 2021, leaving the track without sanctioned racing. The facility has since been used for driving experiences and as commercial storage, and remains owned by Speedway Motorsports.
