Circuit
Kansas Speedway sits at the intersection of Interstates 70 and 435, around 13 miles west of Kansas City, Kansas, and was conceived by International Speedway Corporation to bring big-time oval racing to the Midwest. Construction began in 1999 and the 1.5-mile tri-oval was completed in early 2001, with its first top-level NASCAR race won by Jeff Gordon that September. From 2001 to 2010 the circuit also welcomed the Indy Racing League and IndyCar Series, the two championships even sharing a weekend in 2001. A major 2012 project repaved and reconfigured the oval, introducing progressive banking of 17 to 20 degrees in the turns, a 9-to-11-degree front stretch and a five-degree back straight. The same works added a 2.37-mile infield road course, which briefly attracted Grand-Am sports car events in 2013 and 2014. SAFER barriers line much of the concrete retaining walls between the corners and along the front stretch. The venue today hosts two annual NASCAR weekends covering all three national divisions, plus a round of the ARCA Menards Series. The grandstands seat 72,000 spectators and the facility includes more than 60 luxury suites. Now part of NASCAR's portfolio, Kansas is recognised as a fast, modern intermediate oval.
