Circuit
High Plains Raceway is a club-owned road course on the high plains east of Denver, near Byers in Colorado. It was conceived after a string of Colorado venues closed in the mid-2000s, including Second Creek Raceway near Denver International Airport, leaving the region's amateur racers without a home. Five clubs that had run Second Creek banded together as Colorado Amateur Motorsports Associates (CAMA) to build a replacement, evaluating around 40 sites before settling on land at Byers in 2005. Designed by engineer and racer Bill Howard to exploit the rolling terrain, the circuit secured planning consent in early 2008 and was funded by roughly 1,000 private donors who helped raise the $3.5 million needed. Construction was completed in a matter of weeks, and full track operations began in 2009. The full course runs 2.55 miles with significant gradient changes that drivers have likened to the old Riverside circuit. Four configurations are available, and the facility is busy almost every weekend from April through October with track days, driving schools and wheel-to-wheel club and SCCA racing.
