Circuit
The Fiorano Circuit (Pista di Fiorano) is a private test track owned by Ferrari, located at Fiorano Modenese next to the marque's factory town of Maranello in Emilia-Romagna. The idea came from Enzo Ferrari, who wanted a development circuit within reach of the works rather than having to transport cars to Modena or Imola for testing; construction began in 1971 and the track officially opened on 8 April 1972. Laid out as a figure-of-eight in the manner of Suzuka, it was originally 8.4 metres wide and 3.000 km long. A chicane was added in 1992, and in 1996 a fast bend replaced a sharp corner at the end of the pit straight, producing the current 2.976 km full configuration. Fiorano is deliberately packed with a wide variety of corner types and radii so that Ferrari can simulate the demands of other Grand Prix circuits, and it is fitted with extensive telemetry sensors, a large skidpad for tyre testing and, since 2001, an irrigation system to recreate wet conditions. Enzo Ferrari kept a house at the circuit and would watch or listen to his Formula One cars testing there until his death in 1988. The track lends its name to the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano and to the Assetto Fiorano packages of the SF90 Stradale and 296 GTB. As a closed development facility it holds no public race events, though Tifosi often gather at the roadside to watch testing.
