Hill Climb
The Rampa Internacional da Falperra is Portugal's best-known speed hillclimb, run on a 5.2 km stretch of the EN 309 road as it winds up to the Falperra and Bom Jesus heights overlooking Braga in the country's north. Cars climb roughly 262 metres from start to finish, on gradients that average around 5 percent, over fast, twisting tarmac framed by the hillside. Competitive racing on the hill dates back to 1927, and the event grew into Portugal's most-attended motorsport occasion, regularly drawing crowds estimated near 200,000 along with fields of about 250 competitors. The FIA brought the hillclimb into its European Hill Climb Championship in 1978, and it also counts toward the Portuguese and Spanish national hillclimb series. Long organised by the Clube Automovel do Minho, the meeting was paused between 2002 and 2009 over safety concerns before returning in 2010 with improved arrangements; a shortened layout hosted the FIA Hill Climb Masters in 2021. Italian aces Simone Faggioli and Christian Merli have each topped the hill six times, with Merli holding the outright benchmark set in his Osella prototype.
