Circuit

The Autodromo di Pergusa, widely known as Enna-Pergusa, is Sicily's most prominent racing circuit, laid out around Lake Pergusa, the island's only natural lake, a few kilometres south of the city of Enna. Built by the local municipality in 1951 using the access roads encircling the lake, it began life as a fast, near-oval blast where running wide risked a trip into the snake-filled water. Racing gained prominence in the 1960s when the non-championship Mediterranean Grand Prix drew Formula One machinery, with wins for Lorenzo Bandini, John Surtees and Jo Siffert, before the event switched to Formula 2 and later F3000. To curb rising speeds, a succession of chicanes was added from 1970 onward, transforming the once flat-out course into a stop-start lap that places a premium on braking and traction. The World Sportscar Championship visited in the 1970s, where Lella Lombardi became the first woman to win an FIA-sanctioned World Championship race. After the FIA revoked its licence in 2004, the circuit fell silent before renovations to kerbing and run-off areas brought it back at FIA Grade 3, reopening for national racing in 2011. A complete resurfacing in 2019 removed the awkward chicane at the pit entry, and the present 4.95 km configuration carries 16 turns. Today the Italian GT Championship is the highest-profile regular visitor, alongside local series and testing, and the circuit briefly revived the historic Coppa Florio in 2020.

The current full lap encircling Lake Pergusa, resurfaced in 2019 with the pit-entry chicane removed. A 16-turn course punctuated by the chicanes added over the decades to break up what was originally a high-speed lakeside blast.
