Sprint Course
Curborough Sprint Course is a compact sprint circuit set on a former part of RAF Lichfield, just north of Lichfield in Staffordshire. The site became a motorsport venue when a local farmer purchased it in 1962 and the Shenstone & District Car Club developed what is widely regarded as one of the finest sprint courses in the country. The inaugural sprint meeting took place on 16 June 1963 with a field of 35 competitors, won by Ian McLaughlin in a Cooper Jap. A second meeting that year saw the course shortened to broadly its present-day single-lap form. In 1992 the course was extended with a double-loop track, and protected marshal posts, a spectator bank and proper rumble strips were added. A figure-of-eight format, with cross-overs in the middle of the circuit, was introduced in 2014 alongside a new commentary tower. As a sprint venue, competitors take turns to set the fastest time around the course rather than racing wheel-to-wheel. Curborough hosts more than 20 sprints a year plus autotests and AutoSOLOs, and is used throughout the season for test days, experience days, photo shoots and even pedal-car and cycling events. The long-running Curborough Championship draws around 70 entrants across several organising clubs.
