Circuit

Carolina Motorsports Park is the only purpose-built road-racing facility in the Carolinas, laid out on the site of a former World War II fighter training centre near the town of Kershaw in South Carolina. A group of south-eastern enthusiasts led by Joe Hooker and Bob Humphreys drove the project forward, completing land acquisition in mid-1998 and opening the full 2.3-mile course just twelve months later in 1999. The layout was penned by noted track designer Alan Wilson and has become a favourite for club racing, track days and driver education. In 2007 a new Turn 12-13-14 complex was added to enliven the racing and provide an alternative end to the lap, lengthening the main course to 2.279 miles, while the original corners were retained for occasional use. The track can also be split into shorter East, West and Extended West configurations, and a 0.7-mile kart track was added in 2010. Over the years it has hosted a broad spread of events, from SCCA road racing to the Champ Car Endurance Series, the 24 Hours of Lemons and the PanAmerican SuperBike Championship. On weekdays it serves manufacturer testing, filming and law-enforcement training, with weekends given over to racing and track time. Motorsports Capital LLC took over operation in 2019 and full ownership in 2020, resurfacing the entire course that summer and adding new kerbing the following winter. Retired NASCAR road-racing specialist Ricky Rudd has called it one of the region's best-kept secrets. The circuit lies about four miles south of Kershaw on Highway 521, roughly an hour from Charlotte.
