Circuit

Brands Hatch is a motor-racing circuit near West Kingsdown, Kent, England, beside the A20. It began in 1926 as a natural grass amphitheatre used by cyclists and cross-country runners, hosted motorcycle grasstrack racing from the late 1920s, and was requisitioned as an army base during the Second World War before a tarmac surface was laid for car racing in 1950. The circuit hosted the British Grand Prix twelve times between 1964 and 1986, sharing the race in alternating years with Silverstone, and staged the European Grand Prix in 1983 and 1985 — the latter the race at which Nigel Mansell won his first Formula One victory. Since January 2004 the circuit has been owned and operated by Jonathan Palmer's MotorSport Vision group. It runs two configurations: the 3.916 km (2.433-mile), 9-turn Grand Prix Circuit, and the shorter 1.944 km (1.208-mile), 6-turn Indy Circuit. Its best-known corners are Paddock Hill Bend, a downhill right-hander with an 8% gradient at the end of the start/finish straight, and Druids, the hairpin that follows the uphill braking zone at Hailwood Hill. Both layouts remain in regular use, hosting the British Touring Car Championship, British Superbikes, Formula Ford and club racing through the season, including a BTCC round and a British Superbike round in 2026.

History

Brands Hatch began in 1926, when cyclists spotted the sporting potential of a natural grass amphitheatre on Brands Hatch Farm, near West Kingsdown, Kent. Motorcycle grasstrack meetings followed before the Second World War, when the site was requisitioned as an army base; a tarmac surface was laid in 1950 to bring in car racing. The circuit hosted the British Grand Prix twelve times between 1964 and 1986, alternating the race with Silverstone, and staged the European Grand Prix in 1983 and 1985, when Nigel Mansell won his first Formula One race. MotorSport Vision, the group founded by Jonathan Palmer, has owned and operated the circuit since January 2004.

The circuit

Brands Hatch runs two configurations. The full Grand Prix Circuit is 3.916 km (2.433 miles) with 9 turns, while the shorter Indy Circuit cuts out the top of the lap at 1.944 km (1.208 miles) with 6 turns. The best-known corners are Paddock Hill Bend, a downhill right-hander with an 8% gradient taken at the end of the start/finish straight, and Druids, the hairpin that follows the uphill braking zone at Hailwood Hill. Both layouts remain in regular use, hosting the British Touring Car Championship, British Superbikes, Formula Ford and club racing.
