Circuit
Bira Circuit lies a short distance inland from the seaside resort of Pattaya in Chonburi province, Thailand, and was the country's first permanent motor racing venue when it opened in 1985. Originally known simply as the Pattaya Circuit, it was soon renamed in memory of Prince Birabongse Bhanudej Bhanubandh, better known as Prince Bira, the Siamese royal who raced in 19 Formula One World Championship events between 1950 and 1954 and died in December 1985. Covering just 65 acres, the track is compact by necessity, with a U-shaped 2.410 km layout featuring short straights, several chicanes and a fast downhill double-apex corner. It is bumpy, and the Thai climate makes for hot and humid racing. The circuit became central to the development of Thai motorsport, launching the Mobil One Grand Prix in 1986 and welcoming a McLaren Formula One demonstration in 1990. It has hosted the South East Asia Touring Car Zone Challenge since 1992 and Asian Formula 2000 since 1997, and its grandstands can hold up to 30,000 spectators. The wider complex also includes an offroad track, a rally stage and a karting circuit upgraded to CIK standards in 2006. Today it stages rounds of the Thailand Super Series, the Yamaha Championship and numerous other local series.
