Sprint Course
Barkston Heath is a temporary speed venue laid out on the runways, perimeter track and service roads of RAF Barkston Heath, an active military airfield on the Jurassic limestone heath near Grantham in Lincolnshire. The airfield dates to 1936 as a satellite of nearby RAF Cranwell, was rebuilt with concrete runways and handed to the USAAF's troop-carrier units during the Second World War, and today houses the Defence Elementary Flying Training School. Because the base remains operational, car sprinting here happens only on the occasional dates the RAF releases the site to motor clubs. When it runs, competitors tackle a roughly three-quarter-mile course against the clock: a long full-throttle straight off the line gives way to a tighter, more technical sequence of flowing bends before the finish. The venue has featured for years in the HSA British Sprint Championship and has hosted club rounds such as the Toyota Sprint Series, making it one of Lincolnshire's notable airfield sprint courses.
