Circuit

The Automotodrom Brno lies in the hills roughly 20 kilometres north-west of the city of Brno, in the South Moravian region of the Czech Republic. Motorsport in the area dates back to the 1930s, when an 18-mile course was first laid out on the public roads of Moravia. The modern permanent circuit was built within the bounds of that historic course, north of Kyvalka, but without incorporating any of the old public roads, and opened on 18 July 1987. From its inauguration it regained a round of the Grand Prix motorcycle world championship, hosting the Czech Republic motorcycle Grand Prix that became one of the calendar's enduring fixtures. The 5.403-kilometre Grand Prix layout sweeps across a hillside through fourteen flowing corners, with the looping Omega bend among its best-known features and considerable elevation change along its length. The natural-amphitheatre setting and rhythmic, fast sequences have long made it a favourite of riders and drivers alike. Beyond MotoGP, the venue has welcomed the Superbike World Championship and several seasons of the FIA World Touring Car Championship. After the 2020 event the FIM required a full resurfacing to retain the race, but the circuit's difficult finances meant the work was deferred and Brno dropped off the MotoGP schedule. The Grand Prix later returned to the calendar, restoring one of the sport's classic European rounds.
