Circuit
The Autodromo Yucatan is a modern, international-standard circuit located in Mexico's Yucatan state, set between the city of Merida and the seaside town of Progreso at kilometre 24 of the Merida-Progreso highway. It was the brainchild of Veracruz-born businessman Javier Montero Azuara and opened in 2017 at a cost of around 51 million pesos, bringing a permanent racing facility to this popular tourist corner of Mexico for the first time. The track carries the honorary name of two-time Formula One world champion and Indycar star Emerson Fittipaldi, who attended its inauguration. Largely flat, the layout features 18 corners across roughly 3.34 kilometres and is 15 metres wide with generous run-off, characteristics that make it well suited to motorcycle racing as well as cars. It was opened with a round of the South American Formula Ford series in January 2017 and has since hosted further rounds of that championship alongside local superbike competition. The venue has also proved popular for trackdays and manufacturer promotional events. It forms the first phase of a longer-term plan to expand the site with pit garages, a grandstand, an exhibition area and a hotel.
