Aldo Scribante Raceway sits in the coastal city of Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) in South Africa's Eastern Cape, and serves as the home of the Algoa Motor Sport Club. The circuit is named after Italian-born motorsport philanthropist Aldo Scribante, who provided the financial backing that finally allowed the club to build its track after some 14 years of fundraising. It opened in 1975 following construction on land made available by the city council, with a reported 12,000 spectators turning out for the first meeting. In its early days the venue was little more than a ribbon of tarmac and a pit lane without garages, but covered garages, a control tower and improved spectator facilities were added over the years. The 2.480 km layout is tight and narrow, demanding precise driving and careful setup, and it benefits from close ties to the region's motor industry, with Ford, Isuzu, Continental, Dunlop and SAIC all operating factories nearby. The track was completely resurfaced in 2018, again with help from the Scribante family's construction business. It has helped develop the careers of numerous South African national champions, including Mike Briggs, Terry Moss and Tschops Sipuka. Today it hosts a busy calendar of local and regional racing and drag events, with the visit of the national Sasol GTC Championship as its seasonal highlight.
